Mixing

The Art of Mixing Music is similar to the Culinary Arts. When you have a creative plan, good work flow, multitasking abilities, techniques and great recipes, you'll end up with a great product...!!! Each track in a song or project is similar to an ingredient in a recipe. My job is to balance out all those ingredients by using techniques such as effects, panning, track levels, placement and more. These steps, carefully conducted, will lead to great results.

Mastering

The Final Touch, the polish, so to speak....

Mastering is the addition of that last bit of spicing & thickening. It's the final step the song needs in order to make it compete with other professionally mixed and mastered music. Loudness level, dynamic consistency and EQ (balance) are part of the process that will make it stand out and pop!

Mixing, Mastering and Storytelling Music Videos-Engineer

ROBERT CICORNIO | Arm Fusion Studio

As a dedicated Mixing and Mastering Engineer at Arm Fusion Studio, Robert specializes in creating compelling music mixes and storytelling music videos. He has a track record of delivering high-quality services in the Greater SF Bay Area and working primarily with locals. He provides music mixes that clients love and his expertise and ability to pay attention to details, extends to mastering and producing visually engaging music videos.

About 8 years ago, Robert was working mainly by word of mouth from locals. He recorded, edited, mixed and mastered. He decided, about two years ago (from date of this writing), to create a website and specialize in three areas so he could provide services to the world. Since he loves to create music videos, he decided that his website would have very little writing on it and his intro to services, instructions for clients and other details would be done mostly with videos and some audio.

“You can get a message across much better when you are actually talking to someone. Why? Well, your tone of voice, your expressions, your gestures, amongst other things, will leave a bigger impact than the written word.”

One of Robert’s notable achievements, since starting his website to the world, includes a well-recorded flute project for an album produced in Germany, earning him credit on the album release. Additionally, his storytelling music videos have received exceptional feedback from both clients and viewers.

Robert’s professional goal is to help unknown artists gain recognition through music videos, which he refers to as “A Modern-Day Business Card.” In today’s visual world, with numerous platforms available, Robert believes that a well-crafted video can make a significant impact as most people prefer watching videos for entertainment, tutorials, work and just about anything.

“We are definitely in the age of Visual Platforms!! I work with artists in order to help them realize the vision for their song, fulfill that purpose, that message. Create a modern-day business card with their music and a great video that will make them stick in people’s minds. Instead of just listening to music……. people are watching it…!! Working together and sharing ideas can possibly have an impact and benefit to the artist, myself and the world. This adventure is not always a road meant to be traveled alone.”

Robert acquired most of his experience in the analog world, however he long ago made the transition to digital. Just as technology continues to evolve, so he does as well. He has developed his own new techniques, tricks and processes with mixing, mastering and music videos. He mainly works “in the box”, just like many engineers do these days (even the famous ones) – His view on that is simple;

“The Plug-ins these days are so evolved and good, that many of them mimic analog gear very closely, unlike back in late 90’s to mid-2000’s. The need for analog equipment is not necessary to achieve great mixes or masters”.

He does have an elaborate set up that helps in facilitating the processes needed to give him the listening and visual power he needs so that no details are missed.

Beyond his professional life, Robert enjoys architecture, carpentry, design, computers, great food, exercise and muscle cars. He is also a master chef and a former restaurateur, bringing a unique blend of creativity and precision to all his endeavors.

Robert Cicornio Owner/Chief Engineer ARM Recording

A Quick History

Robert was born into a family rich in culinary and musical talent. His grandfather was a master pastry chef and businessman, his father a restaurateur and master chef, and his mother a locally renowned singer with radio play. From a young age, Robert was captivated by music, often watching his mother and her band rehearse at home. He took piano lessons at 10 but quit early, only to later teach himself to play by ear. He also loved creating beats on furniture and dinnerware, much to his family’s annoyance.
Starting at age 10, Robert worked in his family’s restaurants and pastry shops, learning valuable lessons in work ethics and business. At 18, he faced a pivotal decision between music and culinary arts, choosing the latter first. He became a restaurateur, businessman, and chef, also engaging in restaurant design and consultation. This fast-paced, multitasking environment honed skills that seamlessly translated to his music career.
His passion for music led him to explore how certain songs evoked strong emotional reactions. While running his culinary businesses, he formed several bands, studied songwriting, and delved into recording and mixing. He spent time in professional studios, learning from engineers while recording his own songs. In the mid to late ’90s, he built two home recording studios and later established a semi-pro studio in the early 2000s, where locals could record their demos at a reasonable fee.

Matt Hepworth

Growing up with a music-professor father and a well-known dance instructor as his mother, Matthew was predisposed to be in music and the arts. Later, Matthew developed an interest in computers. In 1984, he hooked a Prophet 5 to his Commodore 64 via MIDI with Steinberg’s Pro16 software—and he was hooked! Since then, he’s become an accomplished musician playing a variety of instruments, including bass guitar and Theremin. You can occasionally catch Matthew performing with The Jonni Lightfoot Band. While Matthew continues to mix and master music for a variety of clients, his main focus for the past decade is teaching people how to use digital audio software like Cubase, Nuendo, WaveLab, Ozone, and RX. He’s also deeply involved in professional video and photography. But his love of music keeps him busy with teaching, writing, mixing and mastering.

Communication is extremely important in just about anything you do. But, what is extremely more important than anything else is the patience and ability to LISTEN well……..Not just hear –  There’s a BIG difference….!!!!
